As a family-owned business with more than 16,000 steam boiler systems operating in more than 130 countries, CERTUSS America — a manufacturer of steam boiler systems based in Germany since 1957 — recently relocated its headquarters to Windsor, Connecticut.

This is just another step in the company’s decades-long story of bringing prefabricated and packaged high-pressure steam solutions to customers worldwide.

After several years in Philadelphia, the company — which has had a presence in the U.S. since 2015 — celebrated the opening of the new North American Headquarter with an open house in March 2023.

The company’s Steam Academy is fully equipped with a 33- and 27-BHP boiler steam system. The academy will host numerous industry events, including multiple training and show-and-tell events throughout the year, focusing on live fire training events, preventive maintenance and services, water conditioning, startups, commissioning, and more.

“The reps, customers, engineers, or contractors who come to this facility will get CERTUSSfied — meaning to learn about CERTUSS’s unique features; the intrinsically safe design of our equipment; and how to improve overall boiler system efficiencies to save energy, water, and chemicals,” said Holger Deimann, president and CEO, CERTUSS America.

Figure 2. CERTUSS’s Steam Academy is fully equipped with a 33- and 27-BHP boiler steam system.

“The 8,000-square-foot location is home to all sorts of spare parts for the hundreds of customers in the U.S,” said Shawn Hartigan, product support manager, CERTUSS. “We are now stocking all parts and components in Connecticut, increasing our support to our customers as well as reducing their downtime.”

The facility is designed to help clients achieve maximum efficiency and productivity. Located adjacent to Bradley Hartford International Airport (BDL) and near a variety of hotel accommodations, it is accessible for customers.

“Experiencing CERTUSS firsthand, as well as touching and feeling our units while operating, convinces everyone who needs high-pressure process steam and wants to generate that in the most efficient and smart way,” Deimann said. “With this facility, we now will make an impact in the traditional boiler world and are able to showcase CERTUSS’s products to a broader audience.”

Figure 3. The future of steam generation has landed in Windsor, Connecticut

Whether customers or contractors are looking to expand their knowledge of their own steam generation systems, need assistance with maintenance or repairs, or simply want to stay up to date with the latest industry trends, the CERTUSS America Parts Warehouse and Training Facility is the perfect place for them. The future of steam generation has landed in Windsor, Connecticut. The owner of the CERTUSS rep Power & Process Inc., Dan Varrone, added “Having CERTUSS America headquarter here in Connecticut will boost our business with this incredible product, and I am proud and happy that my team and I work with CERTUSS and represent this brand,” said Varrone.

Happy New Year from CERTUSS America

As we put 2021 in the rearview mirror, and look forward to the AHR Expo in Las Vegas, NV later this month, I will have to ask you to forgive me, as my train of thought turns to oft-used, perhaps overused analogies about how we play the cards we’re dealt in life. I think it’s probably safe to say we’ve all had to play some pretty tough hands the last couple of years, whether in business, or in life, but if we’re still sitting at the table, it’s because we believe in our resiliency, and our ability to rebound.

Fortunately, when it comes to the business of steam boilers, CERTUSS is one of the strongest hands you can play. Let me put our cards on the table:

LEGACY – while offering an innovative, modern solution, the CERTUSS brand has 60+ years of singularly focused German engineering development, and global installation experience as its foundation

SAFETY – from its inception, the CERTUSS brand’s safety-driven design allows it deliver high quality steam faster, more energy efficiently, and in a much smaller footprint than other boilers

DIFFERENTIATION – in a market of “me-too” boiler products, CERTUSS offers a unique, innovative, modular on-demand packaged solution of unmatched value in the US market.

PRE-COMMISSIONED – while many boiler manufacturers will “test-fire” combustion, CERTUSS fulfills complete commissioning of their entire sole-sourced system together, including not only the boiler(s), but the entire feedwater, dosing, softener*, and blowdown support systems, including all interconnecting piping & wiring before the system leaves the factory.

*except the largest softeners which must be field loaded

AUTOMATION – the elevated safety of the CERTUSS design allows for operational scheduling to be pre-programmed, allowing for system start up, shutdown, and blowdown via valve automation, as well as for the boiler system to be placed in a Standby Preservation Mode automatically, significantly reducing the need for operator interaction, and limiting opportunities for operator error. Water sampling and adjusting chemical dosing are the main duties a CERTUSS system operator needs to perform daily.

TECHNOLOGY – a full color HMI touchscreen, providing full system monitoring and control capability both locally and remotely, via screen mirroring, or building management software, along with pre-programmable operation; an innovative combustion air pre-heating/insulating shell design; and a VFD flow-matched, fully modulating, purge-cycle eliminating, 2 stage combustion system, are just a few of the truly innovative technological advancements you’ll find on a CERTUSS steam generation system.

Whether you’re marketing, or in the market for a new process steam generation solution, we know there are a lot of choices, and a lot of noise out there in the marketplace. Across a wide array of applications, we believe that the hand CERTUSS provides, is your best deal.

Shawn’s Two Cents

Boiler operating tips for continued successful operation of your CERTUSS Steam Generator. As you will recall we talked about hardness in the feedwater tank last time; this time I would like to touch on the subject of Sodium Sulfite in the feedwater. As you may know Sodium Sulfite is used to scavenge oxygen present in the feedwater before it enters the boiler providing a level of protection for the generator coil from oxygen pitting. If the Sodium sulfite used in the feedwater is not kept hot (above 150 degrees F) or is of the wrong type, then it is not doing its job and your coil is suffering a certain death from oxygen pitting which will lead to irreparable damage to the coil and require replacement in a short amount of time.

In a CERTUSS Generator it is important to note that a Sodium Sulfite rated for one-time pass through is imperative. (a rapid acting Sodium Sulfite is required). There are different types of Sodium Sulfites and they are for different types of boilers and generators. It is important to measure your excess contained in the feedwater tank from the feedwater sample cooler when the feedwater tank is up to full temperature, between 203-205 degrees F. Use the sample cooler to bring down the temperature of your sample to 68-80 degrees F before introducing your testing drops. Perform your test right away to prevent ambient air from mixing with your sample. Use the specific kit part number 7202415 designed for WIN-L 4130 or Certdose to be sure your sulfite excess is 75-100 mg/l. There are still other things to measure and record daily and we will continue with those next, stay tuned!

Don’t forget to buy this important part!

As part of your daily testing, if you use WIN-L 41xx or CERTDOS Win L 4130, you should be using this test kit to measure the excess of Sodium Sulfite in your feedwater. Please be sure to check the expiration date on your current test kit to avoid false readings.  Part number 7202415 is the correct kit for this application. You can order this and more directly from your CERTUSS America Representative. For a CERTUSS complete water test kit you can order part number 7200552, this includes a hard case and full contents.

Boiler operating tips for continued successful operation of your CERTUSS Steam Generator. As with any steam boiler/generator the most important ingredient of your steam plant is water, properly treated water to be specific! It is important to check the hardness of the water being fed into the feedwater tank once per shift. There should be no hardness detected when measuring from the softener outlet into the feedwater tank. If there is hardness present, then there is a problem with the softening system and it needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

You should also be checking hardness from the feedwater tank to the boiler/generator as well. This reading should also be at zero hardness. If this is not zero, then a thorough check of your system should be performed, raw/untreated water is making its way into your system and returning in the condensate back to the feedwater tank.

Running the unit with any amount hard water will lead to scaling of the coil and could cause irreparable damage which could entail replacing your coil. While it is possible to descale the coil if the scaling hasn’t been going on long or the hardness is at the limit of <0.1 grains it is still best not to have any scaling whatsoever.  A few minutes a day to check the hardness of the feedwater can save tens of thousands of dollars and priceless amounts of production downtime. There are other feedwater treatments that need to be performed and checked which we will cover next time.

Don’t forget to buy this important part!

As part of your routine water hardness testing, you should be using a water test kit that is accurate for the grains of hardness you are trying to measure. Keep in mind the limit of Feedwater Hardness for your CERTUSS Steam Generator is less than <0.1 grains. In order to measure an amount from zero to two gpg, you need to have the Fine Water Hardness Test Kit, part number 7200543. You can order this and more directly from your CERTUSS America Representative. For a CERTUSS complete water test kit you can order part number 7200552, this includes a hard case and full contents.

CERTUSS, a world-leader in boiler technology has been growing since its founding in Germany in 1957. With a presence in 35 countries worldwide and over 10,000 customers, CERTUSS is now expanding its sales network and support services to the US. Their first US site is in Philadelphia, housed at the CBEI Commercialization Center at The Navy Yard.

The choice of Philadelphia for its US flagship is both strategic and somewhat nostalgic. As it turns out, CERTUSS and Philadelphia share a common heritage: 13 families from Krefeld, Germany – where the company was founded and the location of its headquarters – were involved in the founding of the City of Philadelphia. Beyond this historical connection, CERTUSS selected Philadelphia for the city’s strategic position along the economically significant Northeast Corridor, as well as its freight transport (seaport, airport, and rail) infrastructure, and the human resources available in terms of existing high-skilled workers and graduates of the area’s colleges and universities.

CERTUSS steam generators offer highly efficient steam generation on the tried-and-tested principle of water-tube boilers. Reliable, high-quality steam is available within seconds thanks to the use of first-stage burner technology. CERTUSS steam generators are used in more than 80 industries, including laundry service, hotels, cement plants, breweries, food and beverage production, automotive plants, hospitals, laboratories, and pharmaceutical facilities.

CBEI is providing CERTUSS with commercialization assistance to bring their highly efficient boiler technology to the US. The long list of industries that utilize steam boilers makes it clear that there is a large potential for energy savings through replacements of old and inefficient units as well as installation of high-efficiency boilers in new applications.
